    Question

Well, it happened. I got the check engine light.

After driving home today, I left my car running in the driveway while I put the garbe can in. Before I got back to the car, it had a pulsing sound, sort of like an extra "buh" 2 or 3 times per second. Idle speed was not wavering more than normal. And the Check Engine light was on.

I've never had to deal with the C.E. light, so I don't even know how to extract the code.

My guess is I've fouled the plugs and am getting misfires.(?)

This was at 10 degrees farenheit, about the high temperature today.

    Any advice?

    Thanks,

What you do is short out the maintanance switch under the dash. Same one you use to set the timing. Then see how it blinks. IT will have short and long blinks. The first set is the first number, the second set is the second. If forget which are slow or fast. Let us know which number it is. You can look it up too.

    I'm getting:

    Long, short, short, short, short

I guess this means Code 14.

I believe code 14 is the IAC (idle air control) valve. Check to make sure it's not unplugged and that's it's securely connected. I once had an air temp sensor code on my civic. Apparenlty it wasn't connected properly on installation and somewhat pulled out under accelaration. HTH.

Try resetting the ECU. See if it comes back.

Sounds likely. That would explain my whacked out idle a little.

I'll check under the hood when it's a little warmer than 4 outside.

I still wonder how this extreme cold is affecting the JRSC. Does anyone else daily drive in this weather?

    Thanks,

It's got pretty cold around here since I put mine on and if anything it likes it cold.

    Talking

I unplugged and replugged the IAC harness, checked the wires, topped off the coolant and reset the ECU.

I just got back from 45 minutes of FUN driving. The CE light didn't return and the engine's running great.

My 195-60-14 Blizzak's cannot handle WOT in first gear past 3K and in second gear past 4K rpm. I can't wait to get my summer tires back on.

I think the JRSC is going to give me an education on "grip maintenance". That should help my dragging.

    Thanks again for the help.

Glad your CE light hasn't been back. I drive my car daily where the temperature has been pretty cold (high of 15 degrees F) for the past week with no problems. I can't wait to get my summer tires back on too. The blizzaks make my car handle like a minivan.
